‘Maqbool Day’ observed Strike paralyses normal life in Kashmir KT NEWS
SERVICE SRINAGAR, Feb 11: Normal life was paralysed across the Kashmir
Valley today in view of the general strike observed on the death anniversary
of founder chief of JKLF Mohammad Maqbool Bhat. The call for the strike was
given by Hurriet Conference and supported by JKLF. The organisations had
also asked the people to observe the day as "Maqbool day". All the shops and
business establishments remained closed. Same was the case with government
and semi-government offices. Transport was off the roads. This city wore a
deserted look with people preferring to remain indoors. Large number of
security men were deployed in strength for security reasons. Reports of
general strike were also received from almost all the major and other towns
of the Valley including Baramulla, Sopore, Pattan, Budgam, Pulwama, Shopian,
Anantnag, and Kokernag. Rich tributes were paid to Maqbool Bhat at a public
meeting at Jamia Masjid here this afternoon. A number of Hurriet leaders
including Haji Sheikh Ali Mohammad, Bashir Ahmad Bhat, Peer Hafizullah
Makhdoomi, Ghulam Nabi Zaki, Abdul Khaliq Hanief and Ghulam Qadir Hagroo
addressed the people. The speakers threw light on the life and role of Bhat
in " freedom struggle". They said the JKLF founder chief’s work is a guide
for the"freedom fighters". The Hurriet leaders urged the people to remain
united and take speedy steps to take the ongoing movement to its logical
conclusion. They strongly assailed the "state terrorism" and the gross
violation of human rights by the security forces. They said Mirwaiz Umar
Farooq and Abdul Gani Lone are in touch with New Delhi based ambassadors of
different countries in connection with the Kashmir issue. They urged the
international community to intervene and get the issued solved. A procession
was also taken out and the people raised pro-freedom slogans.
