TRIBUTES TO MAQBOOL BUTT

ON THE 20th ANIVERSARY OF HIS MARTYRDOM

Death anniversary is on 11th Feb, 2004

"For us, Azaadi means not just getting rid of foreign occupation of our beloved
motherland but also to remove hunger, poverty, ignorance and disease and to
overcome economic and social deprivation. One day, we shall achieve that
Azaadi." – Maqbool Buttl

Muhammad Maqbool Butt is the "Baba-e-Quom", father of the nation. He was a
selfless and liberated person with a visionary mind and big heart. From a very
young age he struggled to awaken the people of Jammu & Kashmir to rise up and
stand tall in the struggle for Azaadi. On his revolutionary path he patiently
and fearlessly faced the slings and arrows of the oppressors and the cowardly
accusations of the corrupt. He was the first Kashmiri to be judicially murdered
on Indian soil, being hanged in India exactly one week before his 46th birthday,
on 11th February 1984. His body remains buried in a jail cell in Tihar Jail, New
Delhi.

Knowing that he was setting an example for the future generations of Kashmir, he
walked to his certain death at the Indian gallows with honour and fortitude in
his eyes.

Oh Maqbool Butt! The people of Kashmir will never forget you!

Maqbool Manzil Maisooma, Srinagar, Kashmir.
