Srinagar, Feb 11 (ANI): Streets wore deserted look in Srinagar on Sunday following a day-long shutdown called by the Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) to mark the 23rd death anniversary of its founder Maqbool Bhat.

JKLF activists took to streets demanding Bhat's mortal remains. Bhat, convicted for killing an intelligence officer, was hanged in New Delhi on February 11, 1984.

All the major separatist groups in the State supported the shutdown.

JKLF activists staged a protest march shouting slogans carrying banners and posters.

"We repeat our demands that the mortal remains of the martyr Bhat should be given to the people of Kashmir and the Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front. In the last four to five years JKLF and 13 million people of Jammu and Kashmir have been demanding that his remains should be given to the Kashmiris," said Javad Ahmad Mir, a JKLF senior leader.

A JKLF statement addressed Maqbool Bhat as "the pioneer of the ongoing freedom struggle of Kashmir."

JKLF declared a ceasefire with New Delhi in 1994 and has been fighting politically for Kashmir's complete independence, both from India and Pakistan. (ANI)
