SRINAGAR:
Life in Kashmir valley came to a standstill on Sunday due to a strike call given
by separatists to remember Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) founder
Mohammad Maqbool Bhat on his 23rd death
anniversary.
Bhat was hanged in
Delhi's Tihar jail on this day in 1984 for killing an intelligence
officer.
The impact of the
strike was felt more as government offices and educational institutions remained
closed on account of
Sunday.
However, shops and
business establishments in Srinagar and other parts of the valley remained
closed in response to the calls given by both factions of JKLF, rival factions
of Hurriyat Conference, Jammu and Kashmir Democratic Freedom Party, J and K
Democratic Liberation Party and other separatist groups, officials
said.
They said private and
public transport system was off the roads on all routes including intra-city and
inter-district routes.
At many
places including Maisuma and Budshah bridge in the heart of the city, supporters
of JKLF pelted stones on vehicles and asked the shopkeepers not to open their
establishments, which ensured a complete bandh, the sources said.
